The day began with an examination of the Features found on Day One. After digging a test hole on the edge of SU II and III , it was determined that both these layers were land fill ie recent layers of soil deposited on top of the ‘natural’ layer.
After lunch the Digger came in and dug a deeper pit at the creek end to remove the ‘fill’. This new pit revealed that there had been five or six layers of fill deposited at this end over the preceeding decades.
SU I and II were therefore also considered to be land fill so Features found in these layers were discounted.
Lying in SU III - the section furthest up the hill - the fire site, Feature 3, is still of interest. The ‘pet burial site’ turned out to be the remains of a post hole. The yellow patch is still a mystery.
By the end of the day we were all a little disheartened – but with three days to go there is still plenty of time to find what we are looking for…
TRAILER DIG!
On a lighter note, The Abbey Museum has loaned us their ‘Trailer Dig’. The Trailer Dig is a recreated miniature archaeological dig in a trailer. There are four corners which allows four students each corner to take part in the ‘Dig’.
12 Clontarf Beach High School Year 8 students took part in the Trailer Dig today and uncovered lots of Egyptian treasure! The Clontarf students were assisted by trained Museum volunteers who are enjoying the dig as much as the students!
